HCI · Design · Accessibility

Hi, I'm Rie (pronounced Ree-ay), a HCI Researcher based in the East Coast, working to improve technology design and practices for accessibility and inclusion.

I'm currently a PhD student and a research assistant in the College of Information Studies (iSchool) at the University of Maryland, College Park. I work with Dr. Hernisa Kacorri on the Inclusive ICT RERC project to extend data science methods to be inclusive for people with disabilities and older adults. I'm a member of the Intelligent Assistive Machines Lab (website under construction), Trace R&D Center, and Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL).

My background is quite interdisciplinary. After I spent my undergraduate training in User Interface and User-Centered Design (UCD) at UC San Diego, I joined a computer vision research lab at University of Tokyo, motivated by wanting to blend design methods, interaction design, and advanced technology to create more human-centered assistive systems. Prior to entering the PhD program, I had several years of professional experience in HCI and accessibility, both in industry and academia (Sony R&D Center; Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo; Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University).

I'm passionate about developing new tools and methods that support the design and evaluation of technoloigies for diverse populations and abilities. For more information on my research interests and projects, check out my Research page!
